The book had its origin when the flagpole in the author’s garden was broken by storm and needed replacement. With the successor in place, the question became on what days should the flag be raised?

The idea that the Union Flag, with its unique evolution, should be used to mark British Victories seemed obvious but a list could not be found. Flying The Flag addresses this omission. This first volume covers European battles.

Creating a list involved defining a ‘victory’ and how far the scope of the list should go. John Taylor sets out his case for including some famous retreats among the list in carefully studied text which puts each battle into its historic, military and political context.
