Getting the best from Amazon

It is up to you as the publisher, author or self-publisher to make your titles stand out. Think about the following:

Have a good cover for your book. People do judge a book by its cover. Our survey shows that the cover is what makes people ‘pick up’ a title.

The blurb is also important to let people know what your book is about. This needs to be written like a good press release and listen to what your friends tell you. Many descriptions do very little to sell the book.

Sell yourself as the writer. People are planning to part with their money and they want to know who they are dealing with.

A list of chapters or table of contents might be worth including on any flyers or web page. If your chapter titles do not reveal anything meaningful then perhaps you should think about some less cryptic chapter titles for the next book.

An excerpt can help and now it is possible to let people browse the content (with restrictions on printing and reading too much). The jury is out on whether this helps writers of fiction, but for non-fiction works checking the content can show the reader if the book has the information or treatment they are after.

Reviews can help but there are systems to stop you providing your own. Readers don’t trust rave reviews and are looking for information rather than opinion.

The university of Maryland (Dellarocas) detected a strong reporting bias in reputations on eBay. Those who remain silent are more likely to have had a negative experience. Their motive for not making a negative comment might be social but could be for fear of rating retribution.

If you see Amazon as your major market place:

You can send your book to your editorial department for review to:

Editorial Department, Amazon.co.uk, Patriot Court, 1-9 The Grove, Slough, Berkshire, SL1 1QP UK (Is this just for UK?)

Submitting cover images

Cover image settings:
  1. TIFF or JPEG format
  2. 648 pixels tall (width to fit aspect ratio),
  3. 24-bit RGB colour.

The image file must be named by the 10-digit ISBN followed by the format in which it was scanned and saved eg: 1234567890.jpg or tiff (It is now accepting the 13 digit ISBN.)

(If the copyright of the cover design or artwork belongs to somebody else you might need to incorporate their notice into the image itself.)

Submitting images via FTP:

Amazon UK say: If you want to send us images via FTP, please send us an email at book-catalogue-dept@amazon.co.uk requesting our FTP password and submittal details.

Submitting images via hard copy:
